[FIC] Tact(less) - Gakuen Alice - Kokoroyomi
So DS is all "wah you haven't written any Gakuen Alice fic in years, write some more" and I was all "wah I'm sick, I can't write, also I have no idea what to write about" and then I swung by [info]31_days, saw today's theme, and was suitably inspired.

And so a Kokoroyomi fic was borne from my love for him as a character and my sadness that more stories about him are not littering the Net. I snuck in a teensy bit of Natsume/Mikan but you can ignore it if it pains you, and I do admit to making up most of Kokoroyomi's backstory because I'm behind in the manga and I can't remember from whence he came.

Be kind to me - I punched this out in about an hour, with coughing and wheezing and sneezing in between. I hate having a cold.

Title: Tact(less)
Series: Gakuen Alice
Length: 1188 words, oneshot.
Character/pairing: Kokoroyomi-centric, some OCs for his family and the usual elementary shenanigans group. Sliiiiiiight Natsume/Mikan.
Rating/warnings: Rated PG for mentions of panties, since I only have one plot device when it comes to Natsume/Mikan interaction. Vague spoilers for stuff around volume 8, but you can read it without knowing and you won't care.
Notes: Written for the [info]31_days theme for July 23: Deciphering hieroglyphics, and here we are, without the Rosetta Stone. I took liberties with the interpretation, but hopefully you'll know what I mean. And major thanks to [info]darkenedsakura for the beta. ♥
Summary: Kokoroyomi has never been normal, but his Alice does let him know some interesting things...

Back when he was younger, before he'd even heard of things like 'Alices' and 'mind-reading' and 'psychosomatic accelerated brainwave acceptance', Kokoroyomi lived with his mother and three sisters. Even then, he wasn’t really ‘normal’ - his power was still developing, evolving, and while he was far from being able to properly see thought patterns and images, he could occasionally pick up on stray thoughts. They sailed through the air like static, popping into his own mind without invitation and coming out his mouth at extremely inopportune times.

"Yes, they do," he told his eldest sister, Chisa, as she eyed the fit of her new pants in the mirror. Her quizzical expression turned furious in an instant, and the lump on his head ached for three days.

"No, he thinks you're weird," he advised his middle sister, Kyoko, who was hanging out the window and waving at one of her upperclassmen, a dreamy smile on her face. He'd never figured her for the vicious type, but the kick she aimed at his shin left quite a bruise.

"Actually, you failed," he corrected his youngest sister, Hikaru, when she told their mother she'd done well on her last Math test.

Chinese burns, he reflected later, really, really, hurt.

His family, although quick to anger, were slow in other ways, and they didn't really understand the nature of his particular gift until he interrupted an otherwise quiet dinner with an incredulous, "Are you really getting married again, Mom?"

As she hadn't accepted Hanazono-san's proposal at that point, the remark was, to say the least, rather surprising. Once she'd calmed down, however (and reassured the girls that even if things did change, yes they could all keep their bedrooms) it came to her attention that this was hardly an isolated incident, and it was entirely possible that her son wasn't quite normal.

"Of course I'm not," Kokoroyomi agreed, sticking out his tongue and touching the tip of it to his nose.

And so, at the tender age of nine, Kokoroyomi was shipped off to the prestigious Alice Academy. Of course he missed his family (he wondered how they were doing now) but the multitude of fresh minds and the sheer variety of new thoughts were enough to keep him occupied and entertained for hours on end.

The teachers, he discovered immediately, were not impressed by his ability to recount their most embarrassing moments. Narumi-sensei returned Alice with Alice and after three blackouts, Kokoroyomi was forced to give up. Jinno-sensei gave him a cold look and thought quite deliberately that should Kokoroyomi ever mention his feelings on that person he would wish he had never been born.

As Kokoroyomi quite enjoyed life, he wisely decided to heed Jinno-sensei's warning.

He found it safer, therefore, to listen in on his classmates instead, and it helped that they all had such interesting reactions. (It never once occured to him that thoughts were, by right, private, and that he should exercise tact in certain situations).

But it was enlightening, slipping in to Shouda Sumire's mind as she catalogued the twenty-seven reasons why Hyuuga Natsume was the most wonderful boy in the world. He told her that he didn't agree with numbers six, fourteen and twenty-one, but instead of the appreciation he'd expected, she went red and abruptly sprouted ears and whiskers, slashing at him with very sharp claws.

He ran away as fast as he could.

It was amusing, tapping in to Noga Ruka's memories of happier times, living with his mother and frolicking with the neighbourhood animals. Kokoroyomi asked him once where his mother came from, because her features were, although beautiful, decidedly un-Japanese. Ruka went very red, then very pale, and then his rabbit leapt out of his arms and bit Kokoroyomi on the cheek.

He didn't ask again.

It was intriguing, seeing what went on behind Imai Hotaru's cool blue eyes - the calculations and machinations that never stopped, complex equations and scientific formulae jostling with mercenary assessments of people and situations and the varying benefits of each. He expressed admiration at one point, telling her how impressed he was that she could fit so much into her mind, and for a long, strange second, she thought nothing at all. And then she showed him the blueprints for her most recent invention, and said, in a clipped tone, that the Horse-Deer gloves would really, really hurt.

He believed her.

Probably the most interesting of all was the boy of the twenty-seven reasons himself - a mind that held darkness and power and a disturbingly keen intellect. Natsume's mind was well-organised and guarded, and he was clever to the point of being able to tune out for the ordinary lessons that took up most of the day. He was also sensitive to Alices being used against him, as Kokoroyomi learned the first time he decided to eavesdrop on Natsume's thoughts.

"Oi," he said, as Kokoroyomi skimmed the top layer of his mind, ignoring such obvious things as this substitute teacher has no idea and I wish Shouda would shut up.

"Oi," he said again, as Kokoroyomi dove deeper, to a level where thoughts fragmented and became images - he saw a village, a hill and heard help, Ruka, friendship.

"Oi," he said very sharply, as Kokoroyomi went further still, to a very dark place, with only a single, resounding thought -

aoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoiaoi

- and then his desk burst into flames.

Kokoroyomi learned a very important lesson that day - don't mess with Hyuuga Natsume.

There was one person who it seemed would never learn that lesson, however.

When the new student had arrived - quite obviously overwhelmed, as all newcomers invariably were - he'd been pleasantly surprised to find she had a high mouth-to-brain ratio, which meant she generally spoke before thinking. It was a refreshing trait that not enough of his fellow students seemed to have and made her thoughts - when she had them - all the more amusing. What was even more entertaining than her character quirk, however, were the reactions his classmates had to her presence: annoyance, dislike, anger and...interest?

"And that's why you're an enemy of all girls!" shrieked Mikan, jabbing her finger in Natsume's general direction. His face registered only practised boredom but his thoughts were anything but - he was, Kokoroyomi noted with some astonishment, actually happy. Or, he amended, as happy as Natsume ever let himself be. No one at the Academy was quite normal, but Natsume’s personality in particular was really something else.

Natsume shrugged. "I'm not the one who's into exhibitionism. Stop showing everyone your panties if you're going to get so angry when people happen to see them."

“Showing! Angry! See them!” Mikan’s head contorted disturbingly and her mouth fell open with a loud clank. She recovered instantly and snapped it shut again. “I do not show people my panties! You are a creep! A pervert! A molester!”

Apparently running out of insults, Mikan satisfied herself with huffing her fury at a seemingly bored Natsume.

Kokoroyomi, privy to both their thoughts, grinned to himself. It was a shame, really, that they couldn’t each hear what the other was thinking. Of course, he could tell them -

Natsume narrowed his eyes at him.

- but then again, maybe not.

END

First fic in the fandom for over a year now - well, this will be interesting. :)

So DS is all "wah you haven't written any Gakuen Alice fic in years, write some more"...

I still lol at what you said, re: "Well you were in my head >_>" :P

XD

Though I'm glad you wrote fic! You know I can't repeat enough the whole "there is no good GA fic out there" thing, so. And I doubt that anyone else can do such justice to Kokoroyomi. Your love for him is just that amazing. So uhm yeah, since I beta'ed I gave you all of the ! lines while I was reading through. You haven't lost your funny, I envy your funny, and...yeah. One of these days, the boy will learn tact, but until then...we'll enjoy the awkward moments that he causes. XD

Oh yeah, when Jinno said 'that person', did he mean Azumi, or the sensei with that Alice, or even someone else?

Memming this, in the meantime, because I have no GA fics mem'd. Still can't believe you did this in an hour - I'll never be able to churn like that. Now, your next GA fic needs to come before another year goes by. :D

Well, you were!

Yeah, it came from nowhere, but it was nice to put something together. I actually wrote it on the computer as well, which as you know is something I generally don't do. Kokoroyomi is ten kinds of awesome and by far the coolest minor character in the whole series - I'd say he's the coolest character but GA does boast some of the most likable characters EVAR and no one can compare to Natsume and Mikan.

I assumed Jinno meant Azumi, but you can read it however you want. I honestly can't remember much of the manga, so the bits that did filter through when I wrote it surprised even me.

No mems! :O Keep looking! I'm sure they're out there, somewhere, just waiting to be memmed!

I bet you I did not go "wah". It was probably more like, "write GA fic damnit no one else does :[" XD

It's the only series I know that makes the side characters all so cool. O_o Sempais, love them so.

In the series, when he says that her Alice reminds him of that troublesome someone, he means someone who had the nullification alice, meaning her dad. Azumi has the alice-stealing Alice, so. I still wish you liked them as much as I do, haha. But we both love Natsume so that works out.

Mem'd, and seriously, there aren't any. We've commiserated over this enough to know. :P

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, you may be correct. :P And yeah, the side characters are fantastic. Sometimes series make all the side characters awesome and let the main characters suffer (or more often, vice versa) but this time everyone is fantastic! I LOVE THEM ALL~! ♥

You know, I've completely forgotten all that. I thought her mother had two Alices, so alas. :( Maybe I'll like them better when I catch up on the manga. And Heroes. ARGH!

Well, this is my fourth story for the fandom, so surely that's enough. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM MEEEEEEEEEE?!

I'd hope that I'm correct about what I'd possibly say. :D

Huh, once I read that, I felt like I thought that at some point too. Since she does steal Alices and all and has part of Narumi's, maybe we read a translation error? Hm. And speaking of Heroes, don't forget your manifesto, y'know.

...More fic, of course! You know I'm shameless. :)

Koko is teh cuteness. I maintain that he is the most underutilized character by the GA writers, so I'm happy to see fic featuring him. And it was so well written! What a great character study.

(Creep, molester, and pervert are not adjectives, however. They are nouns.)

I'm so glad you agree with my extreme love for him! I always get so excited when he pops up in the manga, even if he's just in the corner of a panel. He rocks THAT MUCH.

*corrects mistake* I am so embarrassed that I mixed those up. Of course they're nouns! Argh! Thanks for correcting me (I'd be more embarrassed if you hadn't picked them up and I figured it out on my own later) and I'll just try and blame it on the annoying head cold that's been lingering for the last few days.

*shifty eyes*

Anyway, thanks for reading! I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, and I hope that more authors spread the Kokoroyomi love. ♥

There is not enough love for him! The way you related to the characters, especially Natsume and his constant thoughts of Aoi, were wonderfully crafted. It's wonderful how you can mix in funny with angst, to make a fic that can make a reader smile. :D

Sumire and Kokoroyomi interactions = teh shiz

Oh, I completely agree! There needs to be much, much, much more love for Kokoroyomi, and I hope that he gets more attention in the manga and in fanfiction, too. :) For such a random, minor character, he certainly seems to have a loyal following!

Thank you so much for reading - I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I like to read drama mixed with humour, so I try to put both in fics that I write, as well.

Sumire is awesome, and combined with Kokoroyomi's awesomess, they have a very special friendship indeed. :D

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! Fun is definitely what I was going for here, so I'm pleased that came across in the reading.

DS is very good at poking me into writing for stuff, especially for minor fandoms. Gakuen Alice could do with more fanworks, so it was a pleasure to write. :)

Thanks for the review, and I'm honoured that you're memming it! ♥

Woah... amazing. You know what I remember from my days of GA fanfic searching? Those typical "Natsume and Mikan hate each other but secretly love each other how will they get together" and "what if Mikan entered the academy at age blah blah blah instead of blah blah". Just to clarify - I don't see anything wrong with those (I'm guilty of writing such things ehehehe) but they became unbearably cliche and commonplace after a while. So reading this piece was certainly like letting a huge, cool refreshing wave of water crash on me and sweep me away on a warm, warm day.

Was this posted on your ff.net account, if you have one...? Ehehehe. I'd definitely fave it, dear. Or I'll just place this in my LJ memories...

Oh, thank you so much!

I know exactly what you mean about the GA fanfics. I'm all for cliche fics, but when they're the only type of fics in an entire fandom? That's when it gets old and stale. I've been out of the fandom for a while myself, so I can't say what's around nowadays, but rest assured, I hear what you're saying, and I'm glad to provide something different. :D

Thank you for the lovely comment, by the way! You made my night! And no, I didn't post it to my ff.net account. I generally only put longer stories there and leave the drabbles here in my writing journal, although if you are interested I did post a GA fic there a looooooong time ago. The story is called Honeymoon Tonic and is found as a long oneshot at my ff.net account or in three parts in my memories. I have a few fics in there, but I can't attest to their quality - they were written over a year ago.

Anyway, I've rambled long enough. Thanks again for dropping by!
